Lifelong Learner Courses

Lifelong Learner

Lifelong Learner is an afternoon learning experience for adults with disabilities focused on building independence, confidence, and real-life skills in an adult-centered environment.


This spring, we are offering two class options designed to meet individuals where they are and help them grow.

Program Details

Day & Time: Monday or Tuesday Classes, 3 pm to 6 PM
Location: VSW 325 Main St., Batavia, IL 60510

Participants engage in structured, purposeful activities, including: 


  • Communication, reading, and comprehension
  • Math and practical problem-solving 
  • Money skills and decision-making 
  • Self-advocacy and social skills 
  • Daily living skills and independence 
  • Community awareness and responsibility

Who This Course Is For

What Participants Will Work On

This course is designed for adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities who:

  • Can participate in a group classroom setting
  • Are able to follow basic instructions
  • Can engage in purposeful activities with supervision
  • Can safely use basic tools such as scissors and cooking utensils  


Participants must be able to use the restroom and manage personal hygiene independently.  Say something interesting about your business here.

Support & Safety

What Participants Will Work On

Monday Class: Independence & Exploration

Trained staff supervise all activities

 

  • Clear expectations help participants feel confident and secure 
  • Cooking and hands-on activities are supervised 
  • Staff cannot administer medications during program hours  


In limited cases, a parent, guardian, or support person may be allowed to attend with a participant to support success. This is reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Monday Class: Independence & Exploration

This class is designed for individuals ready to build greater independence and apply what they learn to everyday life.


Participants will engage in:


  • Group discussion 
  • Core academics with real-life application 
  • Independent work time 
  • Journaling and reflection 
  • Light take-home assignments 


Participants will be challenged to connect what they are learning to their daily lives. This includes building confidence, exploring interests, and understanding how skills translate into future employment opportunities. Over time, individuals will begin to see how communication, problem solving, and independent work habits connect to real jobs in the community.


Best fit for individuals who:

  • Can spend time independently at home 
  • Can be out in the community with less supervision 
  • Can work independently for periods of time 
  • Can follow multi-step directions 
  • Are ready for greater personal responsibility

This class focuses on engagement, routine, and supported learning in a structured environment.


Participants will engage in:


  • Group-based instruction and discussion 
  • Core academic activities 
  • Hands-on learning 
  • Communication-building activities 
  • Consistent classroom structure 


This class is ideal for individuals who benefit from guidance, routine, and steady support throughout the session.


Best fit for individuals who:


  • Benefit from ongoing staff support 
  • Thrive with routine and consistency 
  • Learn best in a guided group setting 
  • Need a more structured learning environment
